Patient Care Philosophy:
I enjoy getting to know my patients and their caregivers, and creating a patient centered treatment plan. I believe if we work together we can more easily manage symptoms throughout the cancer journey.
As a nurse practitioner, Emily Gilbert is dedicated to ensuring each of her patients receives compassionate, comprehensive, and individualized care. She enjoys building relationships with her patients, as well as their caregivers, in order to support them through each step of their cancer journey.
In 2008, Emily began her career as a registered nurse in the surgical oncology unit at Henrico Doctors Hospital Forest Campus. She has extensive experience in both inpatient and outpatient facilities throughout Richmond, including intensive care and hospice. In 2016, Emily earned her Master of Science in Nursing with a concentration in Adult Gerontology Acute Care from Virginia Commonwealth University. Prior to joining VCI, she worked for 8 years as a pulmonary/critical care nurse practitioner in the outpatient clinic and local area hospitals. She is a proud member of the Virginia Council of Nurse Practitioners and the Oncology Nursing Society. She has a special interest in tobacco cessation and palliative care and enjoys staying engaged in the latest breakthroughs in oncology and supportive care.
At Virginia Cancer Institute’s West End location, Emily collaborates closely with Dr. Shah to create personalized treatment plans to manage symptoms, as well as enhance patient comfort. She believes that by working together as a team, patients, care givers, and providers can navigate the complexities of cancer treatment, helping to improve each patient’s overall quality
of life.
Outside of work, Emily loves spending time with her husband, two children, and their yorkie, Mooglie. She enjoys traveling, photography, music, playing board games and staying active by running with friends.
