Patient Care Philosophy:
I strive to provide compassionate, holistic care to patients and their families through open communication, in order to develop trust and understanding.
With close to 20 years of experience in oncology, Kathy Oleson provides holistic, and compassionate care to patients with chronic illness. She has worked extensively in infusion settings, supporting patients needing a wide variety
of intravenous therapies, including chemotherapy, blood transfusions, and antibiotics.
Since the beginning of her career, Kathy has worked in oncology units throughout Virginia. She is happy to rejoin the Virginia Cancer Institute team, after leaving in 2009 to pursue an opportunity as an RN for inpatient hospice at Hospice of Virginia. There she developed a passionate interest in palliative care, focusing on improving the quality of life for each one of her patients.
Kathy received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing, with distinction, from University of Virginia, Charlottesville in 1996, and her Masters of Science in Nursing from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2019. Currently, she is continuing her education and is hoping to obtain ACHPN (Advanced Certified Hospice and Palliative Care Nurse) certification in 2025. She believes in the importance of open communication with both patients and their families, prioritizing her patients’ physical, emotional, and psychological needs.
Outside of work, Kathy is learning to play golf, enjoys riding her bike on the Virginia Capital Trail, attending VCU men’s and women’s basketball games, traveling, and reading.
